CORRYVALE FARM

Corryvale Farm is in the west of England. Stephen and Jenny Blackler keep cows and chickens and sell
milk and eggs. But most of their money comes from Jenny’s sheep.
She has 50 sheep and each one has enough wool for six sweaters. Every six months, Stephen cuts this
wool off the sheep so they won’t get too warm. Five years ago, Jenny made some sweaters with the
wool and tried to sell them at country markets. But it was summer and the weather was hot so people
didn’t want to buy sweaters. She then made some socks. Everybody loved them because they were
cheap, strong and easy to wash.
That’s how Jenny’s business started. At first she made the socks at home, but soon she had thousands
of customers so she had to send the wool to a factory, where all the socks are now made on machines.
There are six colours, five sizes for all ages, and different socks for walkers, sportsmen and skiers.
Jenny is busiest at Christmas because Corryvale socks are a favourite present. On the walls of Jenny’s
office, there are lots of letters from happy customers all over the world.

Hen Friend

When Julie Carver was six years old, she lived on a farm. It was her job to feed the hens every
morning before breakfast. There were three hens: Daisy, Maisie and Lazy. Daisy was Julie's
favourite.
Every day when Julie came home from school, Daisy ran to the gate, flapping her wings and
squawking loudly. One day Julie was feeling ill and couldn’t go to school. Daisy sat outside
the house all day making the 'koor, koor' sound that hens make when their chicks are young.
When Julie was nine, her father got a new job. The family left the farm and went to live in a
flat in town. They couldn't take the hens with them. Julie was sad. The people who bought
their farm promised to take good care of the hens, but Julie knew she was going to miss
Daisy.
One day Julie's teacher decided to take the class on a picnic. The picnic vas in a park near
Julie's old home. Julie was sitting with her friends, enjoying herself. Suddenly, they heard a
loud squawking noise. They looked up and saw a hen running towards them, flapping its
wings. It was Daisy!

In many secondary schools in Britain the wearing of school uniform is compulsory. Some schools argue that there are many disadvantages to this system. Most students don’t agree with school uniform, however, for a number of reasons. Firstly, when you have to wear the same clothes as everyone else, you don’t have a chance to develop personal taste in the way you dress. Moreover, people who look scruffy usually look scruffy in their uniforms, too. Therefore, you can always tell the people who come from poor homes because their uniforms are not as new or don’t fit properly. Lastly, the main reason why most students don’t like school uniforms is because most schools choose such horrible colors and styles that don’t suit young people at all.
