But behind the scenes there are people whose work is to make sure that the steel is never wasted. In fact, recycling or re-using steel cans is so successful that every day of the year more than five million cans start new lives in new steel products.

After you have thrown away your can, what happens? Well, first of all it is collected by the men who empty your dustbin each week and take to a tip, together with all the other household rubbish. Then the rubbish is sorted and the steel cans are taken separately to a special factory which turns old cans into high quality steel. It’s this steel that may well find its way back into your home in the form of knives and folks, garden equipment and, of course, food and drink cans.

So next time you open your fizzy drink, just remember where your can may have been!

Saving the Environment: One Home at a Time

Pollution can be seen not only throughout the world, but also in our own homes. It comes from household chemicals, the amount of water people use and the waste people produce and throw away. What can be done to stop this pollution? Surprisingly, a person can help save the environment by doing simple things.

First, we need to recycle, which allows products to be used over and over again. Recycling can also reduce the number of trees cut down to produce paper products. It takes very little effort. It is not hard to place plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans and paper in a bin. Anyone can do it.

Second, we need to watch the amount of water used at home. It can be conserved by taking short showers instead of baths, repairing leaky faucets, using the dishwasher or washing machine only when fully loaded, or simply turning the faucet off while brushing your teeth.

Third, we need to reduce waste. We need to recycle whenever possible, but shouldalso try to use this waste effectively. For example, grass clippings and food scraps can be made into compost for plants. The average person produces 4.3 pounds of waste every day, but we can reduce that amount by recycling and reusing.

If we do our part in our own homes, we can help keep the planet from becoming more polluted.

1. Pollution is caused from the following sources except .

A. water in rivers B. water from households

C.wastes D. house chemicals

2. Recycling can help us .

A. never cut down trees B. produce more paper products

C.place garbage bins easily D. use products again and again

3. In order to save water, we can do all of the following things except .

A. fully use the washing machine

B.repair leaky faucets

C. take short showers instead of baths

D.turn the faucet off while brushing your teeth

4. Recycling helps to reduce waste because .

A. plants need to develop

B.waste can be recycled and reused

C.a person can do it in his home

D.an average man produces compost for plants

5. The word “It” in paragraph 2 refers to .

Think of all the things you throw away: juice bottles, soda cans, candy wrappers. It adds up. How much trash do you produce?

Americans throw away an average of 1 ton of trash per person every year. Most of this trash gets buried in big holes in the ground called landfills.

A lot of this garbage can be recycled, or turned back into something useful. Just about any material can be recycled. The main things we recycle today are made from metal, paper, glass, or plastic.

People recycle for many reasons. One of the main reasons is to conserve resources. Making new aluminum cans out of old ones means less aluminum is needed for new cans.

This leads to a second reason people recycle: It saves energy. Recycling old aluminum cans takes a lot less energy than making new aluminum. To make new aluminum, you need to mine metal ore from the ground, remove the impurities, and refine it into a finished metal.

Recycling also conserves valuable land. By recycling, we produce less garbage. That means fewer landfills are needed for dumping our trash.

A load of rubbish

Line

In the UK, people are finally starting to listen to the message about recycling. British families now recycle about 22% of their waste. Only for five years ago, the figure was 10%. That’s good news for the environment- but there’s a lot more than to do. Some other European countries, like Germany and Holland, already recycle about 60% of their waste and that’s the goal for the UK.

Households in England which produce 25 million tons of waste a year. More than half of this is garden waste, paper, cardboard and kitchen waste – with which people could recycle. They could also recycle plastic, wood, glass and aluminum cans. In fact, if everybody in the UK was recycled all of their drink cans, there would be 14 million fewer rubbish bins of waste each year.

Recycling isn’t the only way to reduce the amount of rubbish what we throw away. More than 40% of the waste in our bins is packaging from shopping. If we changed the way to we shop, we could easily reduce the amount of waste. For example, street markets and small shops often use less packaging than supermarkets. And being of course, if we grow our own vegetables, there wouldn’t be any packaging at all.
